Additional Updates for Sage 50
Sage released a couple of additional major updates or modifications for Sage 50 Accounting (formerly Sage 50cloud) users:
TLS Update
TLS (Transport Security Layer) is an external security protocol that is present in software such as your Sage accounting system. In Q4 2018, Microsoft began deprecating TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1, both of which are included in older versions of Sage 50. Any user not on a currently supported release may see their application switched to read-only mode at Sage’s discretion.
You can follow these steps to determine your current version:
- Open Sage 50
- Select Help
- Select About Sage 50 Accounting
- The version will be listed under Release
If you discover that you are version 2020.1 or older, or have any other questions about this issue, please reach out to SWK at info@swktech.com promptly.
Sage 50 MFA
Sage announced in Q2 2024 that they would begin implementing multifactor authentication (MFA) in web-connected versions of Sage 50 (i.e., Sage 50 Accounting). MFA adds another layer of security for logging into your accounting software, prompting users to complete another action after entering their password credentials such as using an additional code or a biometric signature like a fingerprint.
To prepare for the change, we suggest that Sage 50 administrators review this Sage University Course on creating new users, or read the article “How to add a new user”. Each user seeking access to cloud-connected services will need a Sage Account; refer to “What is a Sage account and how to sign up” for guidance.
Finally, view the full instructions on how to sign up for two-factor authentication here.
Should You Download the 2024 Version of Sage 50?
Yes. We recommend it.
The latest version of Sage 50 offers even more than the great, time-saving integration that is sure to simplify and streamline your HR tasks. It also provides performance optimizations and key maintenance and security updates.
Additionally, remaining on an older version leaves you at risk of the TLS 1.0 and 1.1 EOL, which both creates cybersecurity concerns for your data and the possibility that your system will be locked down. Upgrading to current version of Sage 50 ensures that your security protocols are up to date.
With that said, you should consider 2 important points before you upgrade:
- If you use third-party apps that are integrated with your Sage data, you should ensure that those apps are compatible with the newest version.
- If you use Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Standard, or Windows Server 2012 R2, you will need to update your operating system before you update to the latest version of Sage.
Of course, if you have any questions about this version or compatible software and hardware, the experts at SWK Technologies are happy to help you.
